Why Convert JPG to 24-Bit BMP Format?
The JPEG (JPG) format uses lossy discrete cosine transform (DCT) quantization to reduce byte size for internet sharing. However, decoding JPEG data requires complex mathematical decompression routines that small microcontrollers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and legacy industrial controllers cannot execute in real time.
Converting JPG to uncompressed 24-bit Windows Bitmap (BMP) extracts and renders the photo into an uncompressed sequential byte array. Hardware displays (such as Arduino TFT shields, e-paper screens, and laser engraving plotters) can read the raw RGB bytes sequentially from memory and write them directly to the display buffer without requiring a JPEG decoding library.
